Chinese markets down after Israel, Gaza violence

Stock exchanges in mainland China traded lower on Monday after observing the Golden Week holiday from October 1-7. Global attention remained on the instability in the Middle East and the potential for the crisis to spread to other parts of the region.

The Shanghai Composite was 1.06% down at 3:41 am CET and the Shenzhen Composite Index declined 0.46% at 3:56 am CET. The S&P/ASX 200 in Australia gained 0.49% at 3:56 am CET. The dollar was 0.13% lower compared to the Japanese yen at 3:57 am CET, trading for 149.144.

The Nikkei 225 and the Kospi were both closed due to respective holidays in Japan and South Korea, while the morning trading session of Hang Seng was suspended due to Typhoon Koinu.
