EPA-EFE/SASCHA STEINBACH

The world's leading cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH), fell on Tuesday amid the release of the latest batch of economic data and updates on the case of the former cryptocurrency exchange FTX.

Earlier it was learned that the US Department of Justice had opened a criminal investigation into the theft of nearly $400 million from FTX-controlled wallets on the eve of the Bahamas-based exchange's bankruptcy filing. Also today, the markets have been mostly negative after the S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller and Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) reports on home prices indicated a decline linked to a reduction in demand and purchasing power.

BTC fell by 1.68% at 2:27 pm ET, selling for $16,632, while ETH dropped 1.71% to go for $1,206 a minute later.
