Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides stressed on Saturday that reunification of the island is the only viable path forward. The remarks were made as the Mediterranean island country marks its 50th anniversary since Turkish forces invaded the island.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, currently visiting the self-proclaimed Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, expressed doubts about continuing the United Nations-led negotiations on the issue, underlining Ankara's readiness to sit down with the Greek Cypriot side to seek a "lasting peace."

The Greek Foreign Ministry reaffirmed Athens' commitment to the solution of a "bi-zonal, bi-communal federation" in Cyprus.
