Danish Crown Prince Frederik officially took on the mantle of the nation's monarch, adopting the title of King Frederik X on Sunday, following the formal abdication of the throne by his mother, Queen Margrethe II.

The 83-year-old longest-serving female monarch of Denmark decided to end her reign after serving the nation for more than half a century and decided to pass the baton to her eldest son due to her health issues and age. Large crowds flocked to the streets of Copenhagen to welcome the nation's new monarch.

King Frederik X, now the head of Europe's oldest monarchy, is married to Australian-born Crown Princess Mary (pictured right). Together, they have four children, with their 18-year-old son, Prince Christian, now assuming the position of the crown prince, thus becoming the first in line to succeed his father.
