Florida Governor Ron DeSantis referred to the Gulf of Mexico as the "Gulf of America" in his recent executive order, focusing on an approaching winter storm expected to bring severe weather to the north of the state.
It noted that a low-pressure system moving across the "Gulf of America," would combine with Arctic air to create significant impacts starting January 21.
DeSentis' language follows a proposal from former President Donald Trump, who announced plans to rename the Gulf of Mexico.
