Deadly storms kill 21 across US Midwest and South

Severe storms swept through the Midwest and South of the United States, killing at least 21 people across several states.

The storm system triggered tornadoes in Missouri, Kentucky, Illinois and Indiana. Kentucky reported 14 deaths, with nine killed in the southeast of the state. Meanwhile, Missouri saw seven fatalities, mainly in the St. Louis area.

Emergency crews are still assessing the destruction and are warning that the number of victims could increase as search efforts continue.

At least 800 people were killed in an earthquake that struck eastern Afghanistan, Taliban authorities said on Monday. The largest number of casualties has been recorded in the Kunar province.
