The Danish Foreign Ministry announced Thursday that the Danish government will advance its full annual contribution of 105 million kroner to the UN agency for Palestine refugees (UNRWA). This will be paid immediately, rather than later in the year as initially planned. Additionally, Denmark will contribute 10.2 million kroner (~$1.43 million) to strengthen UNRWA's role.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Lars Lokke Rasmussen emphasized the importance of UNRWA's work, citing its sheltering of over 1 million displaced Palestinians and its vaccination efforts in Gaza. He expressed concern over recent Israeli laws that threaten the agency’s operations in Palestine.
This move by a European country follows Israel's decision to cancel the 1967 agreement that enabled UNRWA's operations in the region, after passing laws that sever its ties with the organization. These laws are set to take effect in late January.
