DoJ drops charges against Trump over classified docs case

The US Department of Justice has officially dropped charges against US President-elect Donald Trump over the classified documents case, a court filing presented by Special Counsel Jack Smith in the US Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit said on Monday.

The move comes an hour after Smith presented a motion to withdraw the four felony charges against Trump in connection with his effort to overturn his 2020 presidential election.

Florida Judge Aileen Cannon had dismissed the classified documents case last July, arguing that Smith's appointment as special counsel was inherently unconstitutional. However, today's decisions stem from the DoJ's procedure to avoid criminal indictment of a sitting president, which would undermine the executive branch's ability to perform its mandated functions.
