The United States Department of Justice (DoJ) announced in a statement on Monday that it is taking "coordinated" actions against the North Korean government's schemes to fund its regime through remote information technology (IT) work for firms in the US.

"These actions include two indictments, an arrest, searches of 29 known or suspected 'laptop farms' across 16 states, and the seizure of 29 financial accounts used to launder illicit funds and 21 fraudulent websites," the DoJ detailed.

According to the DoJ, North Korean actors have been obtaining employment with US companies as remote IT workers, using fake or stolen identities, and have managed to get hired in over 100 US companies. "These schemes target and steal from US companies and are designed to evade sanctions and fund the North Korean regime’s illicit programs, including its weapons programs," Assistant Attorney General John Eisenberg of the Department's National Security Division remarked.
