The European Commission allegedly intends to boost ammunition production in Europe, Der Spiegel reported Wednesday, citing a discussion paper.
According to the report, European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, wants to present member states with a strategy that would guarantee Ukraine's supply in the defensive fight against the Russian invasion and would also be able to meet the demand from EU countries.
The plan contains three points. The first one provides an immediate boost in the supply of ammunition, particularly 155-millimeter caliber artillery shells, to Ukraine. Secondly, the proposal envisages a joint purchase of 155 mm ammunition by the European Defense Agency (EDA) to fill existing shortages in the arsenals of the EU countries. Lastly, the plan aims to ensure a long-term increase in European ammunition production capacities.
