Vice-President of the European Central Bank Luis de Guindos warned on Friday that the euro area growth in 2022 will be low and could be negative in 2023. He predicted inflation could keep rising before starting to decline in the fourth quarter of 2022.
De Guindos insisted inflation expectations are not de-anchored. However, he added the ECB is worried about the second-round effects of inflation it is starting to see in wage rises. He acknowledged these effects could start a wage-price spiral, which would change ECB projections and necessitate a different policy response than the current one.
