European Central Bank (ECB) Governing Council member and Bank of France Governor Francois Villeroy de Galhau told Le Figaro on Tuesday that the ECB can decide on interest rate cuts independently of United States Federal Reserve (Fed) policy.

The central banker stressed that the ECB can be "free and pragmatic" on the timing and pace of rate cuts.

Furthermore, Villeroy reiterated that there is a general agreement at the ECB to start lowering interest rates in the spring as inflation is approaching the target level of 2%.
