The European Commission approved on Friday the French plan to grant €300 million to Nuward, a subsidiary of Electricite de France (EDF). The company will be tasked with researching and developing small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs).

The project consists of five phases, with the €300 million investment meant to fund its third phase until early 2027. "The project aims to develop processes for the design and construction of SMRs based on a simple and modular design and with a power output equivalent to or less than 300 MWe," the Commission said.
