The United States may face "serious repercussions" if President Donald Trump opts to move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem or recognizes the city as the capital of Israel, Federica Mogherini said on Tuesday. The European Union's high representative for foreign affairs and security policy, who met US secretary of state Rex Tillerson in Brussels, also stressed the significance of negotiations and highlighted efforts to enable a two-state solution, where the ancient city would also be the center of administration in Palestine.
Mogherini, also the vice-president of the European Commission, asked her counterpart's government to commit to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, which enabled the abolishment of sanctions against Iran at the beginning of last year. Killing the nuclear deal would be counterproductive, she stated. Tillerson claimed the US supports the agreement, but cited "destabilizing activities" by the government in Tehran in Yemen, Syria and Lebanon.
