The European Union called on the Chinese government and local authorities in Hong Kong to reverse their decision to suspend four lawmakers on Thursday. The EU noted the decision is not in line with the one country, two systems principle.
China decided to suspend the four legislators, saying they were undermining Chinese sovereignty in Hong Kong and calling for the interference of foreign powers in the region. Thereafter, 15 more Hong Kong legislators resigned in protest.
Earlier, the UK criticized China's move and said it was not in line with the Sino-British Joint Declaration while the United States threatened to introduce sanctions on China over the decision.
