European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen blasted Russia's invasion of Ukraine during her speech ahead of the celebration of Europe day.
"Kremlin's invasion reminds us why we are celebrating Europe day. The day when our peaceful, prosperous and united Europe was born. Seventy-two years later, Europe is stronger and more united than ever," Von der Leyen's prepared remarks read.
Europe Day commemorates the signing of the Schuman Declaration on 9 May 1950. It was officially introduced in 1964.
