The Council of the European Union declared on Thursday head of the Venezuelan mission to the EU persona non grata.

The move came on the initiative of the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell (pictured) after the South American country gave 72 hours to the bloc's ambassador to Caracas to leave the country earlier this week.

The Council announced its move in a statement, where it also described Venezuela's move as "wholly unwarranted and contrary to the EU's objective of developing relations and building partnerships in third countries."
