The European Council announced on Monday that it is sanctioning two Iranian entities and seven individuals over their alleged involvement in the arbitrary detention of European Union nationals "with a view to making political gains." The Council also accused the Iranian government of restricting freedoms of expression, religion and assembly, as well as of a "dramatic increase" in the number of executions.
The EU imposed sanctions on the Shiraz Central Prison, the First Branch of the Revolutionary Court of Shiraz and seven members of the Iranian judiciary. The EU has so far imposed sanctions on 232 Iranian individuals and 44 entities.
