EU requests info on genAI from large platforms

UNSPLASH/GUILLAUME PERIGOIS

The European Commission announced on Thursday that it requested information on generative artificial intelligence (genAI) from Bing and Google Search, as well as large social media platforms Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, and X. The request was under the European Union's Digital Services Act (DSA), which came into force on February 17.

The Commission said it wants the companies to provide more information "on their respective mitigation measures for risks linked to generative AI, such as so-called 'hallucinations' where AI provides false information, the viral dissemination of deepfakes, as well as the automated manipulation of services that can mislead voters." In addition, the Commission requested access to internal documents "on the risk assessments and mitigation measures linked to the impact of generative AI on electoral processes, dissemination of illegal content, protection of fundamental rights, gender-based violence, protection of minors, mental well-being, protection of personal data, consumer protection and intellectual property." The deadline for providing the relevant information is April 5.
