EU said to plan action on Asian e-commerce goods

UNSPLASH/GUILLAUME PERIGOIS

The European Union is considering measures against the large influx of goods from big Asian online retailers, the Financial Times reported on Wednesday. According to five people familiar with the matter, the EU is looking into imposing taxes on the companies' revenues or an administrative handling fee per item to make their low-cost products less attractive to customers.

The report quoted European Commission Executive Vice-President Maros Sefcovic as saying that 4 billion packages from Asian e-commerce firms are expected to arrive in the EU in 2024. Most of them are not checked because they are under the €150 threshold for custom duties, although the EU would not have the capacity to check them all even if the threshold was scrapped.
