European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell on Saturday said the EU thinks Tel Aviv should only use lethal force as "a last resort when it is strictly unavoidable in order to protect life."
Borrell recognized Israel's "legitimate security concerns," but called for an immediate de-escalation of growing hostilities in the region, noting that the bloc is "very concerned by the heightened tensions." "We call on both parties to do everything possible to de-escalate the situation and to restart security coordination, which is vital to prevent further acts of violence," he said.
His comments come after at least seven people were killed in an attack on a synagogue in Jerusalem.
