The European Commission revealed on Friday in a statement actions that would help enhance the security and resilience of submarine cables, as the last couple of months proved to be difficult with some incidents taking place.

The EC announced that security requirements and risk assessments on submarine cables will be tightened, threat-monitoring capabilities per sea basin will be boosted, the efficiency of the EU-level crisis framework for swift action will be improved, and sanctions and diplomatic measures will be imposed on "hostile actors and the ‘shadow fleet'."

The specific actions will be rolled out "progressively in 2025 and 2026 together with the Member States and the EU agency for Cybersecurity, ENISA," the EC detailed.
