The European Union warned on Sunday that it would "respond firmly" if US President Donald Trump imposes tariffs on EU products, following his sweeping levies on Canada, Mexico, and China.
"The European Union regrets the US decision to impose tariffs," an EU Commission spokesperson cited by AP called them "unnecessary economic disruption" that fuels inflation. The representative reiterated that the EU remains committed to low tariffs and a rules-based trading system but would not hesitate to act if its exports are hit.
While Brussels had hoped to avoid a trade conflict through negotiations, Trump recently stated he "absolutely" plans to target European goods next. Trump's latest tariffs have already sparked backlash from Canada and Mexico, raising fears of a global trade war.
