European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell condemned on Thursday North Korea's launch of a military reconnaissance satellite using ballistic missile technology, stating that it "represents a clear threat to international peace and security and constitutes a flagrant violation of United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions that prohibit such launches."

Borrell said North Korea must "cease all illegal and dangerous actions that escalate military tensions in the region." He also called on the UNSC to urge North Korea to return to dialogue and ensure that its sanctions on Pyongyang are implemented, and called on Russia to "refrain from any exchanges of military equipment, missile technology or ammunition" with North Korea.
