California Governor Gavin Newsom on Wednesday declared a state of emergency in reaction to an increased number of bird flu cases in the Golden State and to strengthen the authorities' ability to combat the epidemic.
"This proclamation is a targeted action to ensure government agencies have the resources and flexibility they need to respond quickly to this outbreak. Building on California’s testing and monitoring system — the largest in the nation — we are committed to further protecting public health," Newsom said in a statement.
A number of bird flu cases were detected on dairy farms in southern California but no person-to-person spread was recorded at the present time.
