Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced Tuesday the country's candidacy to host the 2026 UN Climate Change Conference, COP31, at the World Leaders Climate Action Summit of the COP29 in Baku on Tuesday, thanking the nations that have supported the bid.
He emphasized Turkey's ongoing efforts to combat climate change, particularly through the Zero Waste Project, which has prevented 5.9 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions, he indicated. Erdogan also outlined plans to increase Turkey’s wind and solar energy capacity from 31,000 megawatts to 120,000 megawatts by 2035.
In his remarks, the president called for those responsible for the severe humanitarian and environmental disaster in Gaza to be held accountable in an international court.
