The latest Eurobarometer results released on Friday reveal that optimism about the future of the European Union is at its highest level since 2009. Trust in the EU remains at its highest level since 2008 while support for the euro stands at its highest level since 2004.
Out of the 27 member states, a clear majority was optimistic about the future of the bloc, except for Greece where public opinion was split. Large increases in optimism were recorded in Malta, Italy and Portugal.
Concerns identified by EU citizens were topped by the economic situation, followed by the environment and then immigration. At a national level, health is still the primary concern marginally edging out the national economy. In terms of COVID-19 pandemic handling, nearly two-thirds of citizens trust the EU to make the right decisions in their response.
