The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is considering extending Jens Stoltenberg's term as secretary-general, the Financial Times reported on Wednesday, citing officials familiar with the matter.
According to the sources, the alliance feels it is necessary to have a firm leadership amid Russia's military operation in Ukraine and the threat China represents. Meanwhile, as they said, neither of the two candidates to succeed Stoltenberg, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace, has managed to gather unanimous support and present themself as a unifying figure.
"Stoltenberg has been an excellent secretary-general, and I don't see the point in rocking the boat right now," a NATO official told the Financial Times. Meanwhile, Stoltenberg said during his visit to the White House he is not looking to prolong his term.
