Exxon Mobil has decided to decrease the number of workers at its Sakhalin-1 oil production site in Russia as it prepares to abandon the project, according to a report published by the Nikkei on Thursday.
Officials from Japan's government hinted the country's oil supplies from Russia could be impacted by this decision due to half of its Russian deliveries coming from Sakhalin-1.
Exxon confirmed to the newspaper that it would quit its 30% stake in the project after declaring force majeure, the withdrawal process due to circumstances it couldn't control, such as natural disasters or war.
