The United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that an American Airlines flight, which departed from Wichita, Kansas, collided mid-air with a helicopter while making its approach to Runway 33 at Reagan Washington National Airport.
The PSA Airlines Bombardier CRJ700, which is configured to seat up to 65 people, was operating as Flight 5342 for American Airlines at the time of the crash. It collided with a Sikorsky H-60 military helicopter and crashed into the Potomac River, which flows through Washington DC. There has been no word on casualties thus far.
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will investigate the incident, the statement said. DC Fire and EMS department said earlier that fireboats are on the scene.
