Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Christopher Wray confirmed on Wednesday that the agency carried out a court-authorized on-network operation to shut down "PRC [People's Republic of China] state-sponsored hacking group known as Volt Typhoon."

"The Volt Typhoon malware enabled China to hide, among other things, pre-operational reconnaissance, network exploitation against our critical infrastructure," Wray underscored, adding that in this way Beijing tried to "find" and "prepare" to "destroy" or "degrade" the civilian infrastructure that keeps the United States "safe" and "prosperous."

"Today, and literally every day, they're [Chinese hackers] actively attacking our economic security, engaging in wholesale theft of our innovation, and our personal and corporate data," Wray pointed out.
