Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian slammed the United States officials for criticizing Beijing's effort in containing COVID-19 across the country on Thursday, urging both US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and Secretary of State Antony Blinken not to make "groundless remarks."

Speaking at the regular press briefing, the foreign ministry's spokesman underlined that China's coronavirus response has been "science-based, correct and effective," since the outbreak of the pandemic. He added that Washington was not in a position to criticize Beijing for its zero-COVID policy when the United States recorded the highest number of pandemic cases in the world.

Regarding Yellen's remarks that the COVID-19 restrictions could negatively affect the outlook for the global economy, Zhao emphasized that China will keep up its efforts and contribute to the recovery of the world economy through its "effective containment measures."
