The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced Thursday that it is launching a public inquiry into potential censorship by technology platforms.

The agency is investigating whether companies have unfairly restricted users' access to services based on speech or affiliations, potentially violating consumer protection and competition laws.

"This inquiry will help the FTC better understand how these firms may have violated the law by silencing and intimidating Americans for speaking their minds," FTC Chairman Andrew N. Ferguson said.
