The United States Federal Trade Commission filed a lawsuit on Monday to prevent Kroger Co.'s $24.6 billion acquisition of Albertsons Companies Inc., the "largest supermarket merger in US history."
According to the regulator, if Kroger's proposed acquisition of Albertsons goes through, it would eliminate fierce competition among employees. This, in turn, would jeopardize the chances of workers attaining higher wages, improved benefits, and better working conditions.
According to its statement, the FTC charges that "the proposed deal will eliminate fierce competition between Kroger and Albertsons, leading to higher prices for groceries and other essential household items for millions of Americans."
