Fatah urges Hamas to cede control of Gaza

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah movement called on Saturday for the rival Hamas organization to relinquish governance of the Gaza Strip.

Fatah spokesman Monther al-Hayek emphasized the urgency, stating that Hamas should "step aside from governing and fully recognize that the battle ahead will lead to the end of Palestinians' existence" if it remains in power in Gaza.

The appeal comes amid ongoing efforts to reconcile the longstanding division between Fatah and Hamas. In December 2024, both factions were reportedly close to agreeing on a technocratic committee to administer Gaza post-conflict, aiming to end Hamas's control and facilitate ceasefire negotiations with Israel.
