Federal Reserve Bank of Boston President Susan Collins told The Providence Journal in an interview posted on Friday that it would be appropriate to start loosening the monetary policy "soon," should the incoming data come in line with expectations.
"I do expect that we will see some easing over the next few years. But exactly how much and what the timing and pace of those adjustments would be will really have to be determined by the data," she remarked.
She reminded the general public that the Fed has been able to make "significant progress" on inflation, and has done that "amid a labor market that has remained healthy." Mentioning the latest nonfarm payrolls report, Collins asserted that although the digits came in lower than anticipated, she cautioned against "overemphasizing any one or two later releases."
