Two Democratic Federal Trade Commission (FTC) members sued US President Donald Trump on Thursday over their firings, contesting the legality of their dismissals.
Rebecca Kelly Slaughter and Alvaro Bedoya's legal action demands reinstatement and compensation, citing the Supreme Court's nine-decade-old ruling that safeguards independent agency officials from arbitrary removal. The dismissal notices indicated that the commissioners' ongoing roles at the FTC were "incompatible" with the administration's direction, without providing additional details.
"Plaintiffs will not and do not accept this unlawful action: Plaintiffs bring this action to vindicate their right to serve the remainder of their respective terms, defend the integrity of the Commission, and to continue their work for the American people," court documents read. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt previously warned that if the dismissals' legitimacy was disputed, they would escalate the matter to the Supreme Court.
