Guyana Defense Force said on Thursday that five of its soldiers were found dead and two survived after a Bell 412 helicopter crashed near Guyana's border with Venezuela.
The officials said to the local media that pilot Michael Charles, retired Brigadier Gary Beaton, Colonel Michael Shahoud, Lieutenant Colonel Sean Welcome, and Staff Sergeant Jason Khan perished in the accident while Lieutenant Andio Crawford and Corporal Wayne Jackson were found alive.
The helicopter was flying on an inspection of troops guarding a border area with Venezuela. The incident occurred after Caracas approved a referendum to claim sovereignty over the oil and mineral-rich Essequibo region of Guyana. The causes of the accident remain undisclosed.
