France condemned Tuesday Israeli National Security Minister Ben Gvir's visit to the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, describing it as a breach of the historical status quo in Jerusalem.

In a statement from the Foreign Affairs Ministry, the European country said it finds this as an "unacceptable" "new provocation" and it called on Israel to respect the established norms governing these sacred sites. Additionally, France highlighted the importance of Jordan's role in maintaining this status quo.

Earlier during the day, the Israeli minister joined thousands of Jews in prayer at the Al-Aqsa mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem, defying a ban on Jewish worship at the site and prompting widespread international condemnation.
