French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne urged businesses on Monday to cut their energy use by 10% in order to avoid "sudden gas cuts [that] could take place overnight with serious economic and social consequences." She warned that cuts would affect companies first and that "we must, unfortunately, prepare for them."
At a meeting with French business network Medef, Borne called on firms to develop plans to reduce gas demand in September and stated the government will meet with them again in early October to review the options. She also announced that each sector of the French economy will have objectives for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to climate change and will "have to define a list of very concrete actions to be taken."
