United States Representative from Florida Matt Gaetz said on Friday that his colleague from Ohio Jim Jordan was "just knifed in ... an anonymous vote in a secret closed door meeting in the basement of the Capitol."
Gaetz wrote in a post on social media platform X that Jordan is "the most popular Republican in Congress" and pointed out that the entire process to eliminate Jordan as a candidate for the House speaker post was "the Swamp at work." Jordan did not manage to rally enough support from his fellow Republicans to become the speaker in three rounds of House votes and GOP members subsequently withdrew their backing for his candidacy.
Gaetz was the author of a "motion to vacate" that resulted in former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy's removal from the top role earlier this month.
