United States Attorney General Merrick Garland is anticipated to announce the special counsel which will determine if former US President Donald Trump should be criminally prosecuted for the Department of Justice's probes, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, citing people familiar with the matter.
According to the sources, the formal announcement is expected to be revealed on Friday afternoon, local ET time. The special counsel is expected to evaluate whether charges should be pressed in relation to the mishandling of classified documents, alongside the January 6 capitol attacks. The notice broke out only three days after Trump disclosed he would officially be running in the country's 2024 presidential elections.
Previously, Trump's residency, Mar-a-Lago, was raided by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), with the investigation allegedly involving the former president's violation of numerous US criminal statutes.
