A former Manchester City footballer and Georgian politician, Mikheil Kavelashvili, has been elected as the country's new president, the Central Election Commission reported on Saturday.
In late November, the ruling Georgian Dream Party nominated Kavelashvili as its presidential candidate, amid nationwide protests opposing the party's decision to suspend EU accession talks until the end of 2028. Kavelashvili secured 224 votes in his favor, surpassing the required 200 threshold for his election.
Pro-Western President Salome Zourabichvili has served as Georgia's president since 2018 and has distanced herself from the ruling Georgian Dream Party following the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict in 2022. Political uncertainty deepened after the October 26 parliamentary elections, with the ruling party, founded by oligarch and former prime minister, Bidzina Ivanishvili, winning the majority.
