German ambassador to the United Kingdom Miguel Berger told Sky News on Sunday that the most recent reciprocal tariffs unveiled by United States President Donald Trump are "the biggest assault on global trade since World War II."
"We could laugh about it [the tariffs] but it's devastating," Berger commented, adding that the world will have to "find a way to deal with it." He revealed that the trade ministers from the European Union have been talking about the bloc's potential response to the US tariffs over the weekend, ahead of a Monday meeting.
Berger detailed that while the EU decided to react to the steel and aluminium tariffs, it still wants to "give negotiations some more time." As per a Reuters report, the European Commission will propose countermeasures on US products worth up to $28 billion, with products such as meat, cereals, wine, wood and clothing, among others, likely to be affected.
