The German government expressed disapproval on Monday of Elon Musk's recent public support for the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party ahead of the country's federal election on February 23.

"It is indeed the case that Elon Musk is trying to influence the federal election," the German government representative said, adding Musk was free to express his opinion. However, "freedom of opinion also covers the greatest nonsense."

The remarks come a day after Musk published an article in Welt am Sonntag describing AfD as the "last spark of hope." So far, polls place the AfD in second place behind the center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) of Merz, with the Social Democratic Party (SPD) of Chancellor Olaf Scholz in third place.
