Germans headed to cast their votes in snap general elections as polling stations opened on Sunday.

According to a recent poll by Politico, no party is expected to secure a majority, but the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) led by Friedrich Merz is expected to win around 29%, followed by the far-right Alternative fuer Deutschland (AfD), which is supported by the world's richest man Elon Musk and set to take around 21% of the vote. Meanwhile, Chancellor Olaf Scholz's Social Democratic Party (SPD) has the support of around 16%.

The polls will close at 6 pm CET, when the first exit polls are expected. The official result of the vote is likely to be announced early on Monday.
