German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen released a joint statement on Monday, saying they are "deeply concerned" about the severing of the undersea data communications cable connecting the two countries in the Baltic Sea.
"The fact that such an incident immediately raises suspicions of intentional damage speaks volumes about the volatility of our times. A thorough investigation is underway. Our European security is not only under threat from Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, but also from hybrid warfare by malicious actors," the ministers stated in the press release, adding that it is "vital" to protect the shared infrastructure to ensure the "security and the resilience."
Earlier today, it was reported that the fiber optic communications cable connecting Finland to Germany stopped working, with Finnish state-controlled data service provider Cinia stating that an outside force may have severed the cable.
