Germany strongly condemned on Thursday alleged Iranian attacks on Israeli positions in Golan Heights in Syria, calling them a "serious provocation." A German foreign ministry spokeswoman said Berlin has "always emphasized Israel has a right to self-defense," but added it is "crucial that there is no further escalation."
Earlier today, Israel accused Iran of firing "around 20 rockets" at Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, a claim which Tehran denies, saying that "Iran has no military presence in Syria" and that the attack was actually carried out by Syrian forces. Israel retaliated, firing "nearly 60 rockets" according to the Russian Defense Ministry, over half of which were shot down. According to Moscow, the attack targeted "the locations where Iranian armed units were deployed, as well as the positions of the Syrian army's air defense in southern Damascus area and in southern Syria."
