Germany will follow the developments in the number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients in order to determine the level of restrictions imposed on citizens, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Thursday during a press conference.
Speaking at a German Health Ministers' summit, Merkel said that level 2G restrictions will be imposed in places with a hospitalization index of at least 3, meaning that unvaccinated individuals will not have access to cultural events and leisure facilities, with a stricter mask mandate being reimposed on all Germans.
Merkel reiterated that Germany is in the fourth wave of the pandemic, but that the incidence rate is not evenly distributed among federal states, ranging from 117 to 911, and causing measures imposed to vary in severity.
