The Greek Foreign Ministry reaffirmed Athens' commitment to the solution of a "bi-zonal, bi-communal federation" in Cyprus, stressing that the issue of the Mediterranean island will remain the country's top priority.
"The perpetuation of the current status quo, with the presence of occupying troops and the creation of two states, are not acceptable solutions to the Cyprus problem," the ministry said in the statement commemorating the 50th anniversary since Turkish forces entered the island "which led to the seizure and occupation of one-third of the island's territory by the Turkish military forces." "Greece does not accept undue threats, divisive resolutions, or fait accomplis on the ground," the ministry underlined.
It is estimated that between 140,000 and 160,000 Greek Cypriots were displaced from the northern part of the island in 1974.
